The Process Explained
Despite what many people may think, dental implants aren’t artificial teeth; rather, they are customized structures fabricated in a dental lab and comprised of 3 smaller parts – the screw, abutment, and prosthetic.
Titanium is used to create both the screw and abutment because it won’t cause any irritation to your tissues and bones. As for the prosthetic, this typically comes in the form of a dental crown, a small, porcelain cap that fits over top of the implant. The crown is the only visible part of the entire implant. It will help improve the functionality and uniformity of your smile.
When you acquire dental implants near you, you’ll need to undergo at least two surgeries; first, the screw and abutment will be installed. Then, after your mouth has healed for several weeks, you’ll return to see your dentist so they can place the crown. You’ll be given local anesthesia, so you remain relaxed throughout the appointment.
Recovery
It’s essential that you give yourself some time to heal after the treatment has been completed. Facial swelling, bruising, and soreness are common symptoms that arise in the following days. Stick to eating soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies. Be very gentle when you’re cleaning your teeth too to avoid unnecessary bleeding.
